How It Works

Rule of Thirds

The frame is divided into a 3×3 grid. Placing key elements along the lines or at their intersections creates balanced, dynamic compositions. It is the most widely used composition guideline in photography.

Golden Ratio (Phi Grid)

Similar to the rule of thirds but based on the golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618). The grid lines are closer to center, producing a tighter grouping of power points. This layout is often considered more naturally pleasing than evenly spaced thirds.

Golden Spiral (Fibonacci Spiral)

A logarithmic spiral based on the Fibonacci sequence. The subject is placed at the spiral's origin while leading lines follow the curve outward. Use the rotate and flip controls to match your composition's direction.

Diagonals

Diagonal lines from corner to corner create a sense of movement and depth. Elements placed along these lines draw the viewer's eye through the frame. The method of diagonals is commonly used in landscape and architectural photography.

Triangles

A diagonal bisects the frame with perpendicular lines dropped from each remaining corner, creating dynamic triangular zones. This guide is useful for composing scenes with strong geometric elements.

Center Cross

Vertical and horizontal center lines help with symmetrical compositions, horizon placement, and centered subjects. Useful when framing architecture, reflections, or portraits.

Tips
  • These guides are starting points, not rigid rules. Strong compositions sometimes break them deliberately.
  • Try multiple overlays on the same image to see which best matches your subject placement.
  • Adjust line color and opacity for visibility against different backgrounds.
  • Download the overlaid image to share or compare compositions side by side.
